After returning with groceries the other day, I thought…
“Why not pop it up on the blog?“
So I did!
I thought it might be useful to see a glimpse of what I normally buy for vegan groceries. Some days it’s a big produce shop, other days it’s picking up more staples or some of our favorite vegan products. This shop was mostly produce, but still some vegan food goodies to highlight.
Below I’ve detailed the groceries, as well as links to the products and recipes…
Produce
organic romaine, organic seedless grapes, organic kale, organic green beans, organic spinach, cara cara oranges (not organic), organic golden delicious apples, organic spuds, yellow/golden kiwi (not organic), yellow sweet spuds, organic cauliflower, bananas, butternut squash
Pantry Staples
* Ground White Chia Seeds –> I get asked about this A LOT! I think it’s harder to find in the US than in Canada. (True?) I bought this at Winners/HomeSense in Canada. I did find a link on amazon.com for the ground, in a Nutiva combo.
*Canned Chickpeas
*Organic San-J Reduced Sodium Tamari
Fridge/Freezer Staples
*Happy Planet Soups –> see this post for meal ideas!
*Breads (scored on special, here are some of our bread faves)
Treats
*So Delicious Coconut Nog (this is sweet, helps to cut it with plain dairy-free milk)
*Sweets Sweets candy Halloween package
*So Delicious Sugar-Free Vanilla Ice Cream (I also sometimes buy the cashew ice creams. Just sometimes.) 😉
So guys, did this video give you any ideas? Would you like more of these? I’ll try to become more savvy with the vids. x Dreena

Hi Dreena.
Great video. I love that I can see what your buying and be able to go and get it if it’s something I want to try simply because I am also in Canada. It makes choices that much easier and there is a comfort feeling when I see that I am eating the same as you are.
Just watched Food Choices doc and saw that your website was listed in the credits. Nice!
Dreena says
Thanks Darren – and I didn’t know that about Food Choices documentary, that’s nice to know!

Dreena,
I love this post! I feel like I’m in your kitchen just having a chat! Your shop is very similar to mine… lots of fresh fruit and veg with some bread and nut-based dairy. Do you also use Daiya cheese occasionally? My 2 adult daughters recently moved out and I notice we buy a lot less too! Today, I’m off to the last local farmer’s market in my area before it closes for the season 🙁 We love your recipes!
Thanks,
Rachel
Dreena says
thanks Rachel! Yes, we do buy a range of vegan cheeses. I prefer the nut cheeses as they are 1) tastier to me and 2) less processed … however the kids enjoy them and they are a saviour for school lunches when nut-free is a requirement. Enjoy your market shop!

Hi Dreena,
Thank you so much for sharing! I love grocery shop videos and always get new ideas. Thank you for your cookbooks. I use Let Them Eat Vegan regularly and like that I can trust all of the recipes in it and know they will come out great. All of the food you bought looks so healthy and delicious!
Dreena says
<3 thanks for that, Rachel, that is so heartwarming. Thank you!

Love this, thanks! I find myself buying less organic produce these days since so much of it is packaged in plastic whereas I can buy non organic loose and use my reusable bags. I do belong to an organic co-op and can buy produce in bulk with less packaging but it is still frustrating to see organic grocery store produce so over packaged.

Thanks Dreena…really enjoyed your post and the spontaneous nature of the video. My husband and I are no oil, plant-based ‘starchivores’ and have no trouble finding delicious meal ideas. Feeding our kids and grandkids when they visit though…..challenge of the year. Hearing what your kids eat and how you amend recipes to appeal to their palates always gives me good ideas. Love what you do and love your cookbooks.

Loved the video, thanks! And I would especially love to try your new recipe for brussels sprouts, when you’re ready to share… that’s one veggie my family doesn’t really like (truth is, I don’t usually like them either!!).

As a working mom of three young kids, I am always looking for any info related to feeding growing kids, time management, etc. I have and love your PPF book (the White Bean Guac is on our regular lunch rotation, the kids love it!!), so I’ll welcome posts like this or anything else about weekly routines. It is really time-consuming for me to do the menu planning, grocery shopping, cooking, clean-up, and still actually enjoy my kids. Probably not an uncommon issue 🙂 Thanks for all the incredible work you do!

I’ve never seen So Delicious Sugar-Free ice cream. What is it sweetened with? Right now my husband will only eat the Ben & Jerry’s.
Hollyce says
Our produce staples are a little different, but otherwise we have exceptionally similar shops! :o)

As a mom of three too I love these posts!!! I’ll check out the ice cream! Would love to see more! I like the tip of bumping up the soup, it’s one I need to do more of. It’s easy on week nights when things get busy. Would also love to see what you eat in a typical day/week. I love that you post what your kids eat and now I’m curious about you since you said you didn’t eat much bread! 🙂
Dreena says
Cool, thanks Erin! Funny, after I mentioned the bread I expected that question would come up! I eat a lot of bowls for lunch, and so those usually have starchy veg (sweet spuds, winter squash), quinoa, beans, greens, etc. Mornings I always have green smoothies, and snack through the morning on fruit and whatever I’m prepping/testing (and that is sometimes brownies, lol). Dinners always differs, and I do enjoy some bread with soups and such, but just not a huge bread lover/eater like my family. I love other carbs like bananas, grains, beans, etc. I’ll definitely do another video or two!

I enjoyed this video! I’m always interested in seeing what other people buy at the grocery store and what’s in their fridges!

Thanks Carrie!

This is such a fun post! My kids were looking over my shoulder, unable to comprehend why I would want to see a video of someone’s grocery shop, but I find it enormously interesting! I will be looking for that coconut ice cream, it looks delicious. :). Looks a lot like my family’s groceries, when we don’t allow ourselves to get carried away with the snacks.
Dreena says
haha, that’s funny, and ohhh I get it. We are easily amused by vegan food. 🙂

Hi Dreena,
What a fun post! Loved the video and all the goodies! I would love to see similar videos. Lastly, I liked that the video was unedited and spur of the moment, it made it very relatable. Thanks! Hope you eat this all in happiness and good health! xoxo
Dreena says
Thanks Tiffany, and I’m *so* thankful you said that about the editing. I hesitated and was going to try and edit in youtube but then it looked so strange that I said “screw it”, going up as is! 🙂

Really enjoyed this, thank you
