What’s a Typical Produce Shop for a Vegan Family?
I have another vegan groceries video for you today. Many of you enjoyed the last vid, so here’s round two: a typical produce shop for our vegan family of five.
Full disclosure: I’ve had this video on my phone since November. But with getting caught up in the holidays, and possibly these squares :)… I got sidetracked. Very.
Plus, I’ve been working on another project with the good doctor, and was busy helping get word (and recipes!) out about The Cheese Trap.
So, after a few months I realize this groceries video is still sitting in my camera roll.
*whoops*
Sidenote: I start the video mentioning it’s another soggy day in Vancouver. Some things haven’t changed in three months.
On to the video!
This was one of my large produce shops. I do a big shop like this at least twice a week, but also pick up other vegan groceries in between. This works for me as I hit the stores after dropping off the girls at school. But, if you have wee ones, it is definitely easier to do just a couple of shops a week – and be done!
Also, as the kids have gotten older, they just simply eat more. Their appetites are robust, and I haven’t quite adjusted to the quantity of certain staples we need. Within an afternoon, they can clear through all the fresh berries I bought, and demolish a loaf of bread at lunch.
Also, this time of year, the availability and quality of produce really varies. So food shopping really is that – shopping around for produce specials and also very fresh produce (as well as vegan food specials).
Grocery list on this produce shop:
- organic kale
- organice romaine
- mandarins
- parsley – see my green smoothies post!
- organic bananas (they taste better!)
- organic cukes
- fuyu persimmon (not seasonal now, this was November!)
- japanese eggplant (not a usual staple for me)
- organic roma tomatoes
- organic spinach
- organic sweet spuds
- organic bosc pears
- organic gala apples
- avocs!
- organic carrots
- snow peas
- Natura soy milk
- organic seedless grapes
- organic strawberries
- pitted dates, this Parnoosh brand my FAVE!
- cocoa powder
- salsa
- tortilla chips – this flavor THE best!
- organic frozen raspberries
- frozen mangoes
- ziploc containers
- Rice Cream vanilla ice cream
- So Delicious cashew ice cream (p.s. I just found the Snickerdoodle ice cream in Canada, whoop!)

All that plastic is why I buy all my produce at a local market. That way I can put it in my own fabric bags to take home. Your shop looks about the same as mine though. Except for the soy milk which, sadly, my body just cannot digest.

Most of this produce is already packaged. I do bring my shopping bags, and reuse the bags we do get – and we recycle everything. Plus, we are vegan which makes the greatest environmental difference.

Oh, I love this! Sometimes, we get into a food rut, just stocking up on broccoli, kale, lettuce, tomatoes, and fruit. This is a great list to help me shake up our routine a little bit!

I love my veggies, so buying produce is never an issue for me. But I could sure use some help with how to shop for some healthy snacks. Veggies and hummus are okay once in a while, but what I really crave are chips, crackers and other salty foods that virtually always contain oil, and are therefore neither low fat nor healthy. I could really use some ideas for completely guilt-free snacks. Thanks!

I too get really frustrated with Ziplock, Glad, whatever, plastic containers. I finally decided to stop using them (except when I’m giving away the food). I bought several sets of glass containers in various sizes for my leftovers and I’m much happier with them.
