Here are vegan apple recipes to make the best out of one of the best fall foods: apples!
While pumpkin recipes get most of the attention this time of year, I am all about apple recipes.
They are easy to buy and prep, and they can be used in so many plant-based apple recipes from savory to sweet.
And, unlike pumpkin, I find apples are a more consistent ingredient. When using pumpkin in recipes, most of us rely on canned. And I’ve learned that canned pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie filling are not readily available for some (such as Australia). Plus, pumpkin puree varies in density/water content.
Apples, on the other hand, are easy to find. While varieties differ in texture and sweetness, most recipes specify varieties to use. And, I’ve found that it’s easy to interchange based on your preference.
So, let’s get to these vegan apple recipes, both savory and sweet!
Vegan Apple Recipes: Baking/Sweet
Applesauce: I have to start with perhaps the most iconic apple recipe. I offer two cooking methods for you in this recipe, stovetop and instant pot. While categorized here as “sweet”, this applesauce is naturally sweet, from the apples themselves. Unless you want to add any natural sweetener.
Apple Pie: K, maybe this is the most iconic apple recipe! This vegan apple pie recipe also happens to be gluten-free. As this is a recipe I created many years ago, this is the only one I share in this post today that isn’t oil-free. It is, however, incredibly delicious.
Apple-Hemp Muffins: While not an iconic apple recipe, these muffins might be slightly iconic in our little plant-based world. I know this recipe has been a favorite for many of you for a long time. Bump up the apple deliciousness by adding diced apple into the batter (about 3/4 – 1 cup).
Apple Nachos: These are SO much fun. They look like they might be complicated, but they aren’t. Really just slicing some apples with a little lemon juice tossed in to halt oxidation, and then topping with a date drizzle and some fun adds (especially popcorn)!
Vegan Caramel Apples: These are ALSO fun. And, that caramel isn’t a melted candy – nope, it’s a date caramel. Try them anytime during fall, not just for Halloween.
Raw Baklava-Crusted Apple Tart: This isn’t mine, rather it’s a plant-based apple recipe excerpted from another vegan author’s cookbook. It’s scrumptious!
Vegan Apple Recipes: Savory
Apple Lentil Dal: This is one of my all-time favorite recipes. I make it often through fall and winter. It’s so easy to make, and fabulously delicious without much fuss.
Magical Applesauce Vinaigrette: This is one of those recipes that I see other bloggers imitate as their own (ditto sweet potato cake and spinach artichoke dip). Their versions are almost always identical to mine, using a touch of cumin and cinnamon, along with the balsamic vinegar and mustard. Alas, this is the original recipe. Enjoy.
3-Bean Salad: The apples in this recipe add a delightful crunch and sweetness to the tangy salad marinade. This is a plant-based apple recipe you will return to often.
Holiday Dinner Torte: This festive vegan main uses diced apples to add moisture and flavor contrast in the bean and grain-based torte. It’s one you want to bookmark for the holidays!
Finally, I’m thinking of sharing THIS new apple recipe….
The Charming Apple Crisp from Dreena’s Kind Kitchen. If you have the book, have you tried it?

Last year I tried a vegan loaf wrapped in puff pastry, Wellington style, as my Thanksgiving entree after enjoying a similar vegan item in a restaurant. I didn’t like the loaf though and planned to repeat with your autumn loaf this year. Dreena, which of your loaves do you think would taste best in a pastry? Of course I’m also tempted to just go with this savory holiday torte…

Hi Alison, so funny you mention a Wellington, I was planning on working on one this year. I wouldn’t use the almond loaf, I’d try something with mushrooms or walnuts, or brown lentils with those. Try my mushroom burger and play with that idea: http://bit.ly/12xEbeF

Apples are one of my favourite fruits! Now that the season is upon us, I’m loving all the fresh, local apples. Who doesn’t love a homemade apple pie? Your 3 bean salad is my go to for potlucks, bbqs, etc. It’s so easy to make (ahead of time for less stress) and it’s always a hit. If anyone reading this hasn’t made the dahl…..do it!! So yummy!
